Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Italian Cultural Centre, and Regione Lazio Cultural Society of BC present a cycle of films titled Amor di Roma: four evenings of cinema with films set and/or shot in the Eternal City.
(I missed the first one sorry, it was Thursday May 1st)
The second evening in the series comprises three episodes from three different films:
- From Ieri, oggi e domani ("Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow") by Vittorio De Sica, Italy, 1963.
In her loft on Piazza Navona, high-priced prostitute Mara (Sophia Loren) attracts the attention of a young seminary student, but refuses to seduce him -- then takes a vow of chastity, aggravating her regular customer (Marcello Mastroianni). This episode - the last in the movie - received the most press-coverage, thanks to the famous "striptease" scene, revealing Sophia Loren in skimpy bra and panties.
Colour, 44 mins. Note: this episode is screened in English, with no subtitles. - From Caro diario ("Dear Diary") by Nanni Moretti, Italy, 1993.
The opening chapter of Nanni Moretti?s wry look at life has the director on his Vespa, cruising a beautifully deserted Rome in the heat of the summer, and reacting to films, locations and characters.
Colour, 26 mins. In Italian, with subtitles in English. - From Night on Earth by Jim Jarmusch, co-prod., 1991.
Out of the five stories of different cab drivers at work in five different cities, this is the episode in which a gregarious cabbie in Rome picks up an ailing priest and virtually talks him to death. Roberto Benigni in an unsurpassable performance.
Colour, 25 mins. In Italian, with English subtitles.
ADMISSION TO ALL SCREENINGS is FREE but separate RSVP required: 604-688-0809 x23 or iicvancouver@esteri.it. [Please be responsible for your own RSVP.]
